Spatial Forecast Verification: Thin Plate Splines

چکیده

Traditional forecast verification is conducted for a single point location. When faced with a grid of points, the usual approach has been to perform forecast verification point by point. Such a strategy is inadequate because it ignores the spatial structure of the field, is highly susceptible to the double penalty problem (especially for higher resolution forecasts), and it does not provide useful diagnostic information about forecast quality. Numerous new techniques for analyzing spatial forecasts have been proposed, and an international project is underway to compare these methods; specifically, the Spatial Forecast Verification InterComparison Project (ICP, http://www.ral.ucar.edu/projects/icp). A special collection of the Weather and Forecasting journal of the American Meteorological society is being prepared with papers pertaining to the ICP. The various methods involved are summarized in Gilleland ∗Research Applications Laboratory, National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado †Institute for Mathematics Applied to Geosciences, National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado

A Comparison of Thin Plate and Spherical Splines with Multiple Regression

Thin plate and spherical splines are nonparametric methods suitable for spatial data analysis. Thin plate splines acquire efficient practical and high precision solutions in spatial interpolations. Two components in the model fitting is considered: spatial deviations of data and the model roughness. On the other hand, in parametric regression, the relationship between explanatory and response v...

Bivariate splines for ozone concentration forecasting

In this paper, we forecast ground level ozone concentrations over the USA, using past spatially distributed measurements and the functional linear regression model. We employ bivariate splines defined over triangulations of the relevant region of the USA to implement this functional data approach in which random surfaces represent ozone concentrations. We compare the least squares method with p...

Spherical Methods for Spatial Interpolation: Review and Evaluation

Global change research has placed new demands on methods of spatial analysis. In particular, spherical methods for spatial interpolation are required when spatial analyses are performed over large areas of the Earth's surface. In this article, spherical spatial interpolation procedures are reviewed, compared, and evaluated. Three classesof spherical interpolants are evaluated in detail: distanc...

Spatial Risk Smoothing

This paper describes a method for estimating insurance claims or risk premiums allowing for spatial dependence as well as explanatory factors. The concepts are related to those used for graduation of mortality tables using cubic splines but extended to spatial dependence as found in many insurance products. Firstly techniques for measuring spatial dependence are reviewed. Then models with bivar...

Div-Curl weighted thin plate splines approximation

The paper deals with Div-Curl approximation problem by weighted thin plate splines. The weighted thin plate splines are an extension of the well known thin plate splines and are radial basis functions which allow the approximation and interpolation of a scalar functions from a given scattered data. We show how the weighted thin plate splines may also be used for the approximation and interpolat...
